The traveler’s trail around Asia is rather well trod. Whether you’re being called a farang (Thailand), waeguk (Korea) or laowai (China), you – the foreigner – are nothing new to the locals. A source of income and at times even intrigue, there are undoubtedly some elements of authenticity and intimacy that can be lacking at some of the better-known destinations.


If your ideal Asian escape doesn’t include chili-free meals for foreign palates, guesthouses run by fellow gwalios or aggravating scores of singlet-clad heathens, you might want to consider one of these five (relatively) untapped Asian destinations...
